May the Model Prayer Model Us

May the Model Prayer Model Us
Matthew 6:9-13

A. Lesson Text: Matthew 6:9-13 – “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in
     heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For
Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

B. I never tire of hearing the life-changing words of this prayer . . . It is indeed a
     Model Prayer.

1. This prayer is a model in . . .
    a. Brevity . . . Contains 66 words . . . Can be prayed in less than one minute.
    b. Scope . . . Man’s needs, both physical and spiritual, are included.
    c. Simplicity . . . It is easily understood.
   d. Directness . . . It is not vague.
2. Analysis of the prayer.
   a. It is addressed to God.
   b. Contains three petitions concerning heavenly things.
1. “Hallowed by Your name.”
2. “You kingdom come.”
3. “Your will be done.”
    c. Contains three petitions concerning earthly things.
    a. “Give us this day our daily bread.”
    b. “And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.”
    c. “And do not lead us into temptation.”
C. In his book, The Crisis of The Christ, Dr. G Campbell Morgan points out
that there were seven major crises in the life of the Lord Jesus Christ.
1. At each one of these crises the Lord can be seen spending time in
    prayer.
2. The disciples, impressed by the uniqueness of the lord’s Prayer life (so
refreshingly different from the stilted, formal, ostentatious, and
hypocritical prayer style of the religious leaders of His day), came to Him
and said,: “Lord, teach us to pray.” Luke 11:1
3. And teach them He did . . . And us. Herein we see the basic principles
of prayer in this Model Prayer often called “The Lord’s Prayer.”
PRAYER – “May the Model Prayer Model Us” 2
Herein We Can See an Appreciation of Seven

Things:
A. God’s PERSON . . . “Our Father.”
B. God’s PURPOSE . . . “Your kingdom come.”
1. The establishment of the church was yet future at the time this prayer was
offered . . . In fact, It would be nine chapters later that Jesus would promise
to build it. Matthew 16:18-19 – “And I also say to you that you are Peter,
and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not
prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven,
and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you
loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
2. It was established in Acts 2 and is present even today and until the end of
time at which time it will be delivered up to the Father. 1 Corinthians 15:24
– “Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father,
when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power.”
C. God’s PROVISION . . . “Give us this day our daily bread.”
D. God’s PARDON . . . “And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.”
E. God’s PURITY . . . “And do not lead us into temptation.”
F. God’s PROTECTION . . . “But Deliver us from the evil one.”
G. God’s POWER . . . “Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever”

CONCLUSION:
A. In this beautiful Model Prayer, we see God’s:
1. Person 5. Purity
2. Purpose 6. Protection
3. Provision 7. Power
4. Pardon
